Learn about Izmir bruxism treatment with Uzm. Dt. Buse Karatay Şibal in Bayraklı, Izmir, with personalized evaluation and modern dental treatment options.

What Is Bruxism?

Bruxism is clenching, grinding or involuntary jaw bracing during wakefulness or sleep. Awake and sleep bruxism may involve different mechanisms. It should not be viewed only as a stress condition; teeth, muscles, jaw joints, sleep and medications should be considered.

During bruxism assessment in Izmir, Prosthodontist Dr Buse Karatay Şibal examines tooth wear, restoration damage, bite, muscle tenderness and symptoms. Sleep medicine, neurology, mental-health or physiotherapy input may sometimes be appropriate.

Possible Signs

  • Morning jaw fatigue,
  • Worn, cracked or chipped teeth,
  • Repeated restoration damage,
  • Temple headaches,
  • Tooth sensitivity,
  • Grinding sounds during sleep,
  • Jaw-joint pain or restricted movement.

Bruxism may occur without symptoms, and these signs can have other causes. Diagnosis is not based on wear or reported sound alone.

Causes and Risk Factors

Stress can increase awake clenching. Sleep disruption, snoring, sleep apnoea, certain medicines, nicotine, alcohol and high caffeine intake may be associated. Bite problems alone are not considered the sole cause.

Assessment

History, oral examination, muscle and joint palpation, wear patterns and restorations are reviewed. Sleep-apnoea symptoms may require sleep testing. Sudden severe symptoms or medication-related onset need medical assessment.

Management Options

Custom night guard

May protect teeth and restorations and distribute forces, but does not always remove the cause.

Behavioural awareness

For awake bruxism, habit monitoring, reminders to keep teeth apart and stress management may help.

Sleep and lifestyle

Regular sleep, reducing evening caffeine and alcohol, smoking cessation and treating sleep disorders may be relevant.

Muscle and joint care

Heat, exercises or physiotherapy may be considered. Medicines or injections require a specific clinical indication.

Risks and Follow-Up

Unmanaged forces can increase wear, cracks, sensitivity and restoration failure. Irreversible bite adjustment is not a routine first-line solution. Reviews monitor symptoms, guard wear and restorations.
