What Is a Night Guard?

A night guard is a custom oral appliance used to manage excessive forces from clenching and grinding and to protect teeth and restorations. It may also be called an occlusal splint or bruxism guard. It does not eliminate every underlying cause; it forms part of a protective plan based on diagnosis and review.

When a night guard is planned in Izmir, teeth, bite relationships, jaw joints, muscle tenderness, wear, damaged restorations and sleep-related symptoms are considered. A custom fit obtained from impressions or digital scans is preferred over a generic appliance.

Possible Signs of Bruxism

  • Morning jaw fatigue or pain,
  • Flattened, worn, cracked or chipped teeth,
  • Repeated damage to fillings, crowns or implant restorations,
  • Temperature sensitivity,
  • Temple-area headaches,
  • Grinding sounds noticed during sleep,
  • Tooth marks on the tongue or cheeks.

These signs are not exclusive to bruxism. Jaw-joint disorders, dental pain, sleep conditions and medical causes may require differential diagnosis.

What Does a Night Guard Do?

The appliance creates a controlled contact surface between the arches and reduces direct tooth-to-tooth contact. It may help protect enamel, veneers, crowns and implant-supported restorations. Some patients experience improved muscle balance and fewer morning symptoms, although results vary.

How Is a Custom Guard Made?

  1. Teeth, gums, muscles and jaw joints are examined.
  2. The bite is assessed and additional imaging or referral is arranged when needed.
  3. Digital scans or impressions capture the teeth.
  4. A guard with suitable material and design is fabricated.
  5. Fit, retention, edges and contacts are adjusted in the mouth.
  6. Wear and bite contacts are reviewed at follow-up visits.

Hard Versus Soft Guards

Soft appliances may provide short-term comfort, but in some patients they can encourage clenching and offer limited contact adjustment. Hard acrylic splints allow more precise bite control and monitoring. Material is selected according to examination findings and treatment goals.

Use and Cleaning

Wear time depends on professional advice and is commonly during sleep. Place the guard on clean teeth without biting it forcefully into position. After use, clean it with a soft brush and cool or lukewarm water. Hot water, bleach and abrasive toothpaste may damage it. Store it in a ventilated case away from heat.

When Is Review Needed?

Arrange review if the guard becomes loose, cracks, causes pain, changes the bite or if jaw locking develops. New fillings or crowns can alter fit. Regular checks allow surface wear and contact points to be adjusted.

Risks and Limitations

A poorly fitting or unsupervised appliance may contribute to tooth movement, bite changes, gum irritation, excess saliva or dryness. A conventional night guard does not treat sleep apnoea. Snoring, pauses in breathing, severe daytime sleepiness or morning headaches may require sleep-medicine assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a guard stop grinding completely?

Not always. Its main role is to protect teeth and manage forces; stress, sleep and other contributing factors may need separate care.

Can I use an over-the-counter guard?

Generic products may not match an individual bite and can cause problems when used without review. A custom guard provides more predictable fit.

Is it made for the upper or lower teeth?

Either arch may be selected according to teeth, restorations, retention and bite.

How long must I use it?

Duration depends on bruxism severity, symptoms and dental risk and should be reviewed periodically.

Will it affect speech?

Minor speech and saliva changes can occur initially; most patients adapt with use.

Can it help headaches?

It may help some muscle-related morning headaches, but headache has many causes and should be assessed.

Will it stop jaw-joint clicking?

Not every joint sound needs treatment and a guard does not remove all clicks. Pain, limited opening or locking needs detailed assessment.

How should it be cleaned?

Use cool or lukewarm water and a soft brush. A recommended appliance cleaner can also be used.

Can toothpaste be used?

Abrasive toothpaste may scratch the surface. Mild soap or the recommended cleaner is generally preferred.

What if the guard breaks?

Do not use or glue a broken appliance. It should be checked to decide whether repair or replacement is appropriate.

Is it the same as an orthodontic retainer?

No. A retainer maintains tooth position; an occlusal splint has different thickness and contacts for force management.

Can patients with implants or veneers use one?

Yes. A carefully adjusted appliance may help protect restorations, making precise contact design especially important.

How is night guard cost determined in Izmir?

Material, design, impression method and adjustment visits influence cost. A personal plan follows examination.
